The Story of the Biodegradable Seat Cover

Once upon a time the standard polythene seat cover was invented to protect seats from dirt and oil during servicing and MOT. Alpha Packaging began manufacturing this product on site in Oxfordshire. The demand grew over the years and the decision was made to move manufacture to the Far East. 15 years on and several trips to our factory on we have now developed a range of seat covers that suit all our customers and can produce the volumes required to meet our current demand.

Our most popular seat covers is our economy white rolls of 100 seat covers in our own patented dispenser box. Due to its popularity and our commitment to sustainability we took the decision to manufacture seat covers including the additive D2W which enables this product to degrade over time.

Our seat covers are all recyclable but now in addition you can purchase a seat cover that is also biodegradable. For more information see below details.

d2w® technology turns ordinary plastic at the end of its useful life, in the presence of oxygen, into a material with a different molecular structure. At the end of the process, it is no longer a plastic, and has changed into a material which is biodegradable (by bacteria and fungi) in the open environment. In the same way as nature's wastes and much, much faster than ordinary plastic.

Description

Stages of oxo-biodegration with d2w® technology:

  1. d2w® masterbatch is added at the manufacturing stage.
  2. Film containing d2w® is extruded and then converted into bags or packaging (or other single use products)
  3. The product behaves like conventional plastic during its intended service life.
  4. After its service life, the bag or packaging may end up in the open environment.
  5. The d2w® then takes effect and the product begins to degrade (in the presence of oxygen).
  6. The product will degrade and biodegrade in a continuous and irreversible process, leaving nothing but carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

Key benefits:

  • Biodegradable (according to ASTM D6954)
  • Looks and feels like ordinary plastic
  • d2w can be recycled with conventional polymer and can be made with recyclate
  • Suitable for food contact according to FDA & EU food contact regulations
  • No toxic residues or persistent microplastics
